What The Hell Is Web 2.0?
Posted on January 9th, 2007 by Simon ChenIt’s one of those buzz words. You know, people start referring to it and you think, rather than look like a dork, you may as well refer to it by the same name, even if you have no clue what it is.
I was fortunate enough to be living and working in the US when the first dot com revolution imploded. It was like watching a spectacular plane crash in slow motion.
Now the dust has settled and venture capitalists and Wall Street have long since forgotten the pain, everyone is referring to the “Web 2.0″ era.
The success of Google is in part, fueling the hype.
Tim O’Reilly of O’Reilly Media has the best explanation I’ve seen.
| Web 1.0 | Web 2.0 | |
|---|---|---|
| DoubleClick | –> | Google AdSense |
| Ofoto | –> | Flickr |
| Akamai | –> | BitTorrent |
| mp3.com | –> | Napster |
| Britannica Online | –> | Wikipedia |
| personal websites | –> | blogging |
| evite | –> | upcoming.org and EVDB |
| domain name speculation | –> | search engine optimization |
| page views | –> | cost per click |
| screen scraping | –> | web services |
| publishing | –> | participation |
| content management systems | –> | wikis |
| directories (taxonomy) | –> | tagging (”folksonomy”) |
| stickiness | –> | syndication |

2007 promises to be the year of consolidation in the online world. Much is afoot, both here in Australia and globally. It promises to be one hell of a year. More to come…
