Video To Replace Face To Face - No Way!

Posted on January 25th, 2007 by Simon Chen

I have a huge respect for Ken McCarthy.

He’s largely responsible for me getting into the online space and his System Seminar is probably the most respected conference in internet marketing.

He sent this video clip to his list this morning - it’s of a guy called Robert Metcalfe, who is allegedly one of the father’s of the internet.

Apart from the interviewer babbling on (which drove me insane), Ken said that the last part of the interview was essentially profound. So I watched the entire 5 mins and 51 seconds and towards the end of the segment, I gripped the chair tightly, waiting for the bolt of lightening to arrive and strike me down.

But nothing happened. No “eureka” moment. No lightening. The earth was still moving.

Listen, the way I see it, video will never eliminate the need for face to face marketing.

As I write this, I’m sitting in London. And tomorrow I head to the US. I’ve got a series of face to face meetings. Now, of course I could have done the meetings via video conference or phone.

But it’s not the same.

And I just can’t agree with Ken or Robert Metcalfe about the fact that online video will replace the need for humans to interract with each other.

Well, not in Asia anyway. Make up your own mind. The video interview is below.

    1. Bob Metcalfe Says:

      Dear Mr. Chen,

You seem to think I said video would replace ALL face to face — perhaps you would not have gotten it wrong had I said it in person (;->). I think video can replace a LOT of face to face. More generally, think of all the energy we’d save by massively substituting communication for transportation. I would not have flown anywhere to read your post, but I was willing to read it over the Internet. See?
