Viacom Demands $1 Billion From Google…

Posted on March 14th, 2007 by Simon Chen

This, as my US neighbour would say, “is another small slice of what’s wrong with America…”

And it is.

Viacom, tired of waiting for Google to remove all if its copyrighted content from YouTube, decided to issue a writ instead. Which only then forces the world’s smartest technology company with a serious wad of “fuck you” money to go and hire the world’s smartest law firm.

Critics of Google might argue that its about time someone stood up to the technology upstart from Mountain View.

Viacom is no fly by night company either, so it’s probably happy to settle in for an expensive legal battle.

You can bet that this will go away and the case will be settled - Viacom will claim victory, their lawyers will slap each other on the back and congratulate themselves on a brilliant piece of negotiating and the copyright issue will still not be any closer to being resolved.
