Scoble Said It, Not Me

Posted on January 29th, 2007 by Simon Chen

This post from famed ex Microsoft employee - Robert Scoble.

It’s just amazing to me that Microsoft has continued with a failed search strategy, even after it’s apparent to EVERYONE (including Microsoft’s CFO) that what they are doing isn’t working. Hint: it ain’t gonna work, even if they flush another billion or two down the “copy Google” toilet.

Despite what a few people may think, I’m not anti-Microsoft. Although this post on NineMSN’s woes in Australia drew more than a few comments.

And I truly am looking forward to installing Vista and seeing the improvements to not only the operating system but to Outlook, Word and Powerpoint.

It just staggers me though that it would take someone with Microsoft’s financial might and resources over 5 years to release a new operating system.

It just can’t be that hard.

But back to Microsoft and its search platform.

I agree with Scoble. Microsoft has well and truly missed the boat with search - even if you believe Google’s view that search is really only 10% solved.

Better to let Google and Yahoo! fight it out in the mainstream search space.

Microsoft would be a lot better targeting the niche market of developers and programmers and putting it’s technical muscle into this space.

Krugle has carved out a niche. And if Microsoft isn’t careful, it will belong to Google within a week. That’s probably the same time it takes someone within MS to arrange an internal meeting just to raise the topic of acquiring other companies…
