Google Is Arrogant…
Posted on March 8th, 2007 by Simon ChenEric Schmidt, CEO of Google admits as much in this recent article courtesy of the Wall Street Journal.
Asked by a member of the audience whether Google is “arrogant,” as charged by some in traditional media, Mr. Schmidt said, “I’m sure we’re arrogant.” But he chalked up such complaints to a negotiating tactic, grousing that one of the ways traditional media negotiate is by leaking details of deal negotiations to the press and then threatening to sue.
Google is going to go head to head with the “old school” media for a long time yet. Partly because the traditional big media players like NBC and Vicacom have so much to lose if they dont get their heads around the online space. And rather than sitting down at the table to work with Google on major syndication and JV deals, they cry foul over copyright laws.
Listen, if the stuffy old BBC can get their heads around it and broker a deal with Google, then it shouldn’t be too hard for the US media giants to work something out.
The 2 last paragraphs of the article really caught my attention though. Friendster, another social networking site, has just moved from Yahoo! to Google regarding site advertising. Yet another troubling sign for the No.2 player.

I agree with you Mr Chen. It does not look good for Yahoo. I wish the would as you say clean up their act and “focus”. I believe that we need another search giant to balance things out for the lowly publishers. Otherwise that Google arrogance might turn into dictatorship.

Yes, we do need another search engine to compete with Google. Yahoo isn’t able to match Google chiefly because of an image problem: people see Yahoo as a portal and email site, rather than a search engine. The opposite is true for Google, most visitors to Google use it for search and not mail. But take a look at Live.com. It has been steadily moving up in the rankings ever since Microsoft added Hotmail and other things to its roster. I personally like it so much that I stopped using Google. And besides, they are getting arrogant and evil. Microsoft used to be more evil, but they’ve mellowed out due to all the anti-trust lawsuits. Google needs to be whacked on its head few times, which probably won’t happen for years to come.
