What’s Left?

I was talking to our lead programmer yesterday afternoon, as we drove home.

He asked me what I thought of the recent, history making deal - Google and YouTube.

I told him what I thought.

Then he said something that surprised me.

“What’s left….”

Now this kid is all of 21. He’s one of the smartest people I have ever met. A few years ago, he won a competition by Apple (he’s an Apple Mac freak) and spent 3 weeks in Silicon Valley.

It’s a very clever way for Apple to get the world’s best talent together, weed out 90% of them and offer the remaining 10% permanent work.

For the last 2 months, he’s been managing a project for us which is the largest we’ve undertaken in this space. His attention to detail and the accuracy of his work is exceptional.

Anyway, I was surprised by his comment. Shocked really.

Because I think there’s plenty left. In fact, because of this whole phenomenon regarding User Generated Content (UGC), it’s only just the beginning.

The thing I love about the internet is that it forces people to think laterally. People are continuing to find new ways to use the medium, to collaborate, to leverage the technology.

Deals like YouTube are good for the online world. They prove what’s possible and for the most part, inspire the innovators.
