Tackling Click Fraud
Posted on August 4th, 2006 by Simon ChenGoogle, Yahoo and Microsoft have just announced that they have entered into an agreement to tackle the ever growing problem of click fraud.
Challenge is that for every fraudulent click, the 3 online power houses still get paid.
I’m convinced they’ve done a lot of soul searching, especially Google, regarding how/what/when they would tackle this as the PR repercussions are looming larger as every record financial quarter ticks by.
The recent US$90m settlement that Google agreed to is chump change.
I personally dont think that the 3 companies will be able to agree to a solution.
Sure enough, they’ll have the collective brainpower to figure it out (albeit temporarily) but to actually all sit around a table, openly share statistics, revenue and click stream patterns - I just can’t see happening for the long term.
Google needs to tackle this head on and to take the lead.
After all, it has the most to gain and the most to lose if it does.
