Split Testing
Posted on October 20th, 2006 by Simon ChenI’m so glad this came from Google.
It’s not new. Successful Internet Marketers like Perry Marshall (of Google Adwords fame) have been talking about “multi-variate” testing - or just plain old vanilla “split testing” for years now.
In fact, at the X10 Seminar back in 2004, we covered split testing in detail.
Watch the demo.
I know very few corporate’s that would perform any sort of split testing (and I don’t mean expensive “usability” tests).
The lack of split testing by Adwords advertisers is one of the reasons Google makes such a shitload of money.
As Perry famously says, Google punishes advertisers who don’t know what they’re doing with a thing he likes to call “the stupid tax”.
If you want some free video content of Perry in action at the X10 Seminar, wander over to Google Video and type in his name. Or you can watch it below.
Split testing is not an online secret and there are no tricks to it. It just takes effort and analysis. It’s plain old commonsense marketing.
Pity more of us don’t do it.
