It’s Ok To Be Human…
Posted on October 27th, 2006 by Simon ChenThis post got me thinking - which is pretty good for a Friday morning.
It’s a bit US centric and is a little simplistic (and most of us would like to think we act this way anyway) but it echoed a chord with me.
And then it got me thinking about the web and how corporates (especially corporates) are throwing huge sums of money to try and be “small”, “nimble” and “human”.
Think of all the interractions you have with your clients or customers - be it online or off.
I wrote down all the people we’re dealing with at the moment (no particular order) and came up with this list (Melissa, Stephanie, Mark, Derek, Guy, Dan, Geoff, Sam, Dane, Mike, Justin, Leticia, Dean, Rey, Nick, Elise, Warwick, Mark, Emmett etc).
I didn’t write down Volkswagen, Hutchison, Webjet, Mercury, Australand, Google etc.
I wrote down the people I have a relationship with. To me, these people on the list above ARE the company. Whatever I think of them is how I actually see their organisation (to a strong degree).
One of the biggest problems with the web and websites in general is that they stop being human. They stop being inquisitive. They stop asking questions.
Why?
Because most people think that their site should be a brochure. Or it should be clever.
But thanks to technology, we can now use audio, video, we can use email to ask questions, we can “learn” about peoples wants and needs by their previous buying patterns and we can interract as humans.
After all, you wouldn’t sit there and say “Man, that Eight Black company is a real prick”, you’d be more inclined to say “Man, that Simon Chen is a real prick”. Which is probably true.
Don’t be afraid of all this political correctness. The web has given us an outlet to explore and interract with each other like never before.
That’s why social networking sites are booming. And will continue to do so.
