Is Simple. Is Good.
Posted on June 28th, 2006 by Simon ChenCaught up with Michael Hewitt-Gleeson last night.
Michael is a good friend and a hugely under-rated resource in this country.
He’s just written a new book which is due for release next week, titled WOMBAT Selling - How To Sell By Word Of Mouth.
Anyway, we originally were going to eat out.
But then he changed his mind and said to us that we would just grab Thai from the local take away. He then said what everyone says about buying take away.
You know, that their particular pizza joint or Chinese or fish and chip shop is the best in Melbourne, or the best in Sydney. It’s human instinct.
You dont really want to say “Oh, yeah, let’s get take away chinese - but honestly, our chinese joint is pretty lousy so lets drive 2 suburbs away and buy there…”
So Michael raves about his local Thai joint.
Then he shows me the menu and reads out the mission statement.
I groaned.
But when he finished reading it, I laughed.
Mission Statement
Cook Good Food.
Sell It.
Have a couple of beers after work.
I then read the entire menu.
It was simply written. And on the back, it told customers to be patient because everything they cooked was fresh and that orders would be processed in order.
It was beautifully simple marketing.
And it worked.
By the way, the food WAS great.
The name of the restuarant - Thai Food To Go, Chapel St Windsor.
