About 6 months ago, I met a very smart guy called Dan Mossop. He has a PhD in computer network security. He’s sort of a bonafide “hacker” in the sense that he spends all his waking hours outsmarting the cyber crooks out there.

And they’re getting smarter.

Twice this year, our servers were the victim of Denial Of Service attacks. If you’ve never heard of this before, its basically the mother of all attacks that can occur to your computer infrastructure. Go here for the official wikipedia explanation.

Trust me, when this happens to you, it’s a royal pain in the arse. And it’s not “if” it might happen, it’s “when” it will happen.

Anyway, back to Dan Mossop.

We met during a job interview. He was clearly not what I had in mind for the job we were hiring for but the whole computer security thing got me thinking.

I got around to calling him a little while later and we got talking about computer and network security and what products were available for the small to medium business owner, in non technical speak language.

It then hit me like a ton of bricks. Dan is clearly one of the smartest guys I’ve met in this space. In fact, he’s a real smart bastard.

I asked him to build a security solution for the consumer market and the corporate market. It will scan your PC (or group of PC’s) and will provide a detailed report on where you’re vulnerable. It will also tell you what to do in order to fix it.

The product is now in beta.

It wont cost you a cent and I’d appreciate the feedback. We may never launch the product commercially and may just keep it for our own use or a handful of clients, but depending on users feedback and the efficiency of the product, it might end up seeing the light of day.
