Can You Really Fire A Client?
Posted on June 5th, 2006 by Simon Chen
Perry Marshall recently wrote an article in his newsletter about having to fire a client.
I thought it was a pretty gutsy piece.
But then again, Perry’s not only one of the most respected authorities on Google Adwords in the world, he’s also one smart marketer.
I’ve been thinking about this post for a few days now.
You see, we had a client recently who decided to send us a “without cause” letter.
It’s sort of like the first warning shot the coast guard fires across the front of your boat before they blow you to smithereens.
They then threatened to turn the matter over to their attorneys.
They didn’t bother to call me, even after 2 separate requests to clarify our position.
Did it piss me off?
You bet.
Am I going to fire the client?
Already have.
Life is too short to work with crappy clients.
And I’m annoyed with myself for not listening to my gut sooner.
So here’s the point.
You dont have to work with everyone who offers to pay you (they have a name for people like that).
You dont have to take crap from clients who are bullies (they have another name for them also).
And more importantly, it’s your right to fire a client if they grind you and your team into the ground.
Are there 2 sides to this story?
Of course.
But this is mine.
And in the story Perry recalled about the right to clienthood, he mentioned 3 critical things that will stay with me for a long, long time.
Trust your head, your heart and your gut.
I didn’t do this. And it jacked me off no end that I didnt.
Sermon over.
